John 21:1-19. “I am going fishing”. What dose God do with us in Christ Jesus, when we fail?
Where: Maps ppt.
Who: Simon Peter, Thomas (from last week) Nathanael, James and John and 2 others.
What Jesus reveals him self again, - Jesus provide fish and make breakfast for the disciples and Peter reinstated.
What dose it look like to show the whole world who Jesus is, - well the disciples are still trying to figure that out it seems.
Peter said I am going fishing, - the brothers are also fishers, - so a least 3 of them know what they are dong, the don’t get any fish all night.
Then as dawn is breaking Jesus was on the shore – the disciples don’t know it is Jesus. He asks in verse 5 if they caught anything? – And they respond no, - why ask? He might want to by fish, - (or will show who he is by providing for them, food and knowledge of who he is).
Jesus asks them to cast the net on the right side of the boat and say they will find some fish there. They do and they can’t get the net back in to the boat because of the many fish.
John then says: It is the Lord, - Who ells could know? – Peter then thew himself in to the sea, - Why? Does he want to get to Jesus first? Why not just come with the boat as the others? Do we run to Jesus like that?
And the others sail back with dragging the fish,
Jesus has prepared a and fish and bread, on a fire, and asks them to bring some fish, - Peter then goes and gets the net on land and there are many fish full of large fish 153, - but the net was not torn John remarks.
This is all amazing feeding miracle, they tried on their own to get food and toiled all night and got nothing, - but following Jesus’ instruction, they had an abundance in minutes, - it seems like the fish is not the main point for the disciples, John states it is the Lord, and Peter jumps and swims to get to him. As it stated in verse 12, after Jesus invites them to come have breakfast, they know it is the Lord, they know it is the risen Jesus, the Christ, God with us. They knew.
Jesus gives them bread and also fish, - (lake breakfast) 14 This was the 3ed time Jesus reveal himself to the disciples after he was raised form the death.  (Those days must have been strange, - okay Jesus is risen, but what are we to do, we are waiting for him to ascend and send the Holy Spirt, so why not go fishing and get some food). Jesus as he had done provides for the disciples, shows himself, and also that he is sovereign over nature and knows where the fish are…
They seem to have a good breakfast, - after that Jesus asks Peter some questions. It can seem troubling or encouraging.
(When God or Jesus asks questions, it is not because he does not know the answer, so why is Jesus asking Peter these questions?) Adam, where are you?  (The questions are for the peoples benefit, - to reflect on who God is, and what does that mean for me and you).
What is Jesus wanting Peter to understand, even confess out loud?  (What about you – Thomas Lord and may God – and what does that mean in my daily life).
First question Simon, son of John – (hi whole name and Identity earthly descent -called him his child before?) do you love me more than theses? Will you follow? Lead, will you teach? Feed my (Jesus’) lambs, - young
Peter: Lord you know I love you… - More that others? Not said. Peter more careful? – Since he denied Jesus?
Second question. Simon son of John – Do you love me? Peter responds the same, Yes Lord you know I love you. (Why the same question 2 times, well it is different – this time only focuses on Peter, not the others).
Jesus tend/shepherd my sheep. – take care of Jesus’ sheep. Guide be a good shepherd for me not for yourself.
Third time: Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter is grieved, because he asked a third time. Do you love me? Lord you know everything you know that I love you.
– Feed my sheep.
What did Jesus accomplish with the questions? He got Peter to wonder, to think to feel, to understand who Jesus is, Jesus was revealing himself to Peter, as Peter was responding and thinking about the questions, - he also gives Peter a job.
A great question. Who do you see yourself to be, -and do you love me? I know you do you love me. Jesus knows the answer, and Peter said that. He confesses Jesus as Lord, and say that Jesus knows how he feels, Jesus know he love him. Peter dose not clam to have higher love for Jesus that the others. Jesus’ question is revealing; what is in Peter, what he thinks and what he believes about Jesus. And they get Peter thinking about; what it means to love Jesus? To Love him and to do his will.
Jesus gives Peter a job, feed my lambs. (Take care of the young and small, the weak, dumb, - the ones who are like you were, the ones that needs to grow, that needs guidance). Tell them about me.
John is showing that people that did not trust in Jesus can be forgiven by Jesus and restored, to Jesus, and send out to share who Jesus is. It shows that repentance and forgiveness is real, that Jesus asks the questions that could be troubling Peter, does Jesus accept me? Does he want a relationship with me, does he want me to lead? I mean I denied him 3 times, when he needed help and support. I misunderstood his mission, to come and die and be an offering for sin and take away guilt and pain restore relationship with God and be the good shepherd, I wanted him to be king now, what is Jesus now going to do? Set up his kingdom, but… No, it seems Jesus is going away, and he wants me to lead and teach, guide, and that will lead to my death. 18-19. What would all that look like, - Jesus say follow me.
As we will read next time – Peter, does not stop with himself,
